So between all the bickering between the Horde and the Alliance, I think we can all agree on something: The Prophet Velen is awesome. Despite his in-game mechanics, the lore behind him is absolutely fascinating, and he is arguably one of the most powerful and good beings on Azeroth.
A little history:
Already a respected elder of his race 25,000 years ago, when the Draenei fled Argus. That means the guy is probably closing in on being 30,000 years old. He was ancient when the War of the Ancients broke out and the Highborne blew up the world!
Respected elder of a race so powerful and intelligent that Sargeras came directly to them in order to recruit them into joining the Burning Legion. Considering we know what the Legion does to any races/worlds that don't directly benefit its plans (utter annihilation), that means the Eredar (and therefore Velen and the Draenei) are pretty freaking powerful.
Stood up to Archimonde and Kil'Jaeden, who were being influenced by Sargeras himself. Rebelled against them, gathered anyone who would listen, and stole an ENTIRE FRIGGIN SPACESHIP, denying the Burning Legion access to his powers and those of thousands of his people. This made the Legion pretty mad, especially Kil'Jaeden and Archimonde, who vowed to hunt Velen and the Draenei to the ends of the universe.
Was personally approached by the deity-like Naaru, and informed that he and his race would become an integral part of the army that would ultimately defeat the Burning Legion. Basically, the guy was personally recruited to help destroy a Titan and his innumerable legions of demonic followers.
Spent 25,000 years successfully evading the Legion's top lieutenants and keeping enough of his people alive - and sane - that they managed to survive in healthy numbers until they reached Draenor. Seriously, can you imagine spending 25,000 years in one space ship (making pit-stops on various worlds, until the Legion came a-calling once again)? There are Draenei who still remember Argus, so we know that at least some of them were alive for that entire trip!
Had to lead his people to safety AGAIN, when the Orcs drank demon blood and decided that the best course of action was to perform genocide against the peaceful blue space aliens who had been living on Draenor peacefully for a couple hundred years, and who had never so much as given the evil-eye to the Orcs. He stole a SECOND space ship, gathered up his people (including as many Broken as would come), fought off the Blood Elves who had sabotaged the ship, and then crashed on another alien world when the Elves' engine sabotage made it impossible to steer the ship.
Had to be an ambassador to all the new races on the new planet, despite the distinct possibility that they'd pull a Genocidal Maniac maneuver like the Orcs did. Instructed his people that Farseer Nobundo (also one of the most powerful lore characters) was a good guy, that the ways of the Shaman were another path to the Light, and that they should all be friends with the Broken instead of regarding them with pity and fear.
Forgave the Blood Elves for kidnapping and destroying one of his friends (by ingesting him, no less), gave his friend's dead body to the Elves, and used it to reignite the Sunwell. Thereby saving the Blood Elf people from themselves, and probably from everyone else who would've had to lay some smackdown on the Elves if they'd kept trying to sate their magical addiction by eating Naaru and summoning Burning Legion demons.
After all he's been through, you'd think Velen might be a bit cynical and battle-worn. But no...he's as kind and thoughtful as ever, and still retains his ability to forgive entire races for the horrors they've perpetuated against his people and the Naaru.
I say, we need to see more of the Prophet Velen once this Twilight and Deathwing stuff is all done and over with!
