I came in on the end of BC, and wrath was my first wow baby.
For the raids I was use to, DPS was the standard and tanking was the role people avoided. Healers almost always ended the fights with half full mana bars.
In Cata, its been changed where healers mana is the new standard, and for a heroic DPS marks will act as a second standard. DPS have never had a problem being the standard, because the answer was always "more is better." Using healers mana to set the challenge is running off healers and making a healing role appear more like a tank role.
This is causing two major roles in a raid to have accepted bars to function, where DPS just needs to be over X. In turn, healers who dont enjoy being the challenge factor have rerolled into DPS or just refuse to heal because "it's not fun anymore."
I really believe setting the standard on a healers mana was a bad game design, and should be saved for heroic mode fights. Using anyone other than DPS to set mechanic limits only scares off a new group.
Before it was the tank you had to work to find. Now it's the tank and the healer.
No chance we might see a change in this design view, or are we just expected as tanks to keep healer alts due to another role feeling more like work than fun?
