Massively has an interesting article up talking about game classifications, and lack thereof, in Australia. Since there are no 18+ mature ratings for games, as there are for films, the sale of some video games down under could actually be seen as a criminal offense. After seeing many MMO titles on Australian retail shelves that did not have a classification, they actually spoke to the Australian Federal Attorney-General's office. The only two MMOs they could find on shelves that were in compliance, were Vanguard (Rated M for moderate fantasy violence) and EVE Online (Rated PG for mild violence). One title that caused a particular stir when it was submitted for ratings classification in some countries -- Funcom's Age of Conan -- arrived on Australian retail shelves silently, without classification or compliant labeling. So, what exactly happens when unclassified video games are sold in Australia? Technically the sale of the game is potentially a criminal offense in Australia. Read more at Massively.
