The Dark knight's role is up front, where all the action is. Don't expect them to stand and stare during a battle, they are the exemplary attackers who use both, their sword and their magic to inflict blows to the enemy HP.
FFXI Dark Knights can't take blows like the Paladin or Warrior. They have to stay just below the hate soaked up by the tanks. Otherwise, the monster might just take a liking to you, as his dinner.
Part-time Dark Knights: They ideally combine with melee jobs, Warrior or the likes. However, if you are a Taru looking to play to his strength, the Black Mage would be decent enough. Not spectacular though, as it takes you away from your primary style of fighting, melee.
To top to off, the Final Fantasy XI Dark Knights use the biggest and slowest weapons in the game; casting would only make them slower. So if you are just looking to up your MP and not go all out to magic, then you'd do well to reconsider.
Warrior or Thief sub jobs look to be more aggressive and better adjusted in party play.
